Thank you so much for this. What you write rings true for me. When I was enmeshed in social justice culture, I was encouraged to embrace my "madness" and part of that involved emotional intensity. This was celebrated which has left me with a complex around taking medication that I need vs embracing my true, unstable and unhappy, self. Still recovering from that so hearing others talk about similar experiences is very valuable. Thanks again.
You describe so well the tension between being real/true/authentic and taking psychiatric medication that exists in that subculture. What an awful double bind to impose on people who are already struggling. I hope your awareness of this dynamic makes room for healthier and gentler ways of taking care of yourself!
